Aviles Street is the original art district as well as the location for an early church, a jail, hospitals, boarding houses and schools. Aviles Street was renovated a few years ago and now is the home to bar and restaurants with sidewalk seating. Museums, Art Galleries and Antique Shops as well as the Trinity Church reside here. Across the street from the General Kirby House which is now the home to the Historic Society is the Hamblen- Holiday Building. Built between 1864 and 1885, the building is actually 2 warehouse buildings that were joined together. This building now houses retail spaces on Aviles Street and Charlotte Street and artists' studios on the 2nd and 3rd floors.
